Chapter 1: Loomings

"Say you are in the country; in some high land of lakes. Take almost any path you please, and ten to one it carries you down in a dale, and leaves you there by a pool in the stream. There is magic in it. Let the most absent-minded of men be plunged in his deepest reveries—stand that man on his legs, set his feet a-going, and he will infallibly lead you to water, if water there be in all that region."
Musing: We just got back from 3 weeks in the mountains. We started in the driest parts of Utah and ended in the lush green mountains of the Northern Wasatch range. I thought of Melville, naturally, as we hiked. Whenever we turned a corner to find a creek or a stream or a minor waterfall, we rejoiced and sat and reflected. It felt like magic even when our feet got wet from a crossing. Not much else to add. Just reminded of the words from Moby-Dick, "meditation and water are wedded for ever." It's good to get away on whatever kind of adventure leads you to whatever kind of magic you can find.
